About the Event

In 2023, the NCCU Arts and Culture Center launched its first campus-wide digital creation call for submissions under the theme “FACES.” Thirteen NCCU students reflected on their internal states through external representations, exploring the transformation between online and offline identities and fostering a dialogue between nature and culture. In 2024, the second call for submissions, themed “He, She, It: Residing in Multiple Universes,” explored the connections between humans and objects. Eleven faculty and student creators produced works reflecting imaginations of places, people, time, space, and even the universe. Over the past two years, selected works have been showcased through physical exhibitions and a cloud-based art gallery, collecting both images and videos, to highlight the vibrant creative energy of NCCU faculty and students. As we enter 2025, the NCCU Arts and Culture Center proudly presents the theme “Resonance in Space,” revisiting the research and practice of laser art by Taiwan’s pioneering technological artists YuYu Yang and Arthur Yang. Their spirit of exploration and self-reflection in confronting the unknown offers profound insight for us in today’s rapidly accelerating era.

YuYu Yang (1926–1997) was a Taiwanese sculptor whose career spanned from the aftermath of World War II to the late 20^th century. His works encompassed a wide range of mediums, including oil painting, printmaking, sketches, ink painting, cartoons, art design, sculpture, and landscape planning. Known for his innovative and bold approach, YuYu Yang played a key role in leading Taiwan’s art toward modernity and variety. Arthur Yang (1955–2015) carried forward his father YuYu Yang’s achievements in public art and expanded upon them by integrating traditional and modern technologies into his sculptures. His works expressed the boundless forces of nature and reimagined the beauty of local mountain and water landscapes. In 1977, YuYu Yang was deeply inspired by an international laser music performance and collaborated with scholars and Arthur Yang to introduce the technology to Taiwan. In 1978, along with Council for Cultural Affairs Chair Chen Chi-lu and National Tsing Hua University President Mao Kao-wen, he co-founded the Laser Science and Art Promotion Association of the Republic of China. In 1979, the “Great Han Laser Science and Art Research Institute” was established, with Arthur Yang focusing on laser experiments and promotion. The 1980 “Great Han Laser Landscape Exhibition” marked Taiwan's first laser sculpture exhibition.

The characteristics of laser art bear a remarkable resemblance to algorithmic art. Artists have long embraced “randomness” as a method for artistic creation. Since the 1960s, artists have used traditional computer programming (distinct from machine learning) to generate countless outcomes by continuously adjusting parameters within random or semi-random processes. This event invites participants to reflect on the intersection of art, technology, light, and life as explored by past masters. It encourages dialogue between past and present technological mediums, deepening the significance of digital works. By engaging in these explorations, we hope to inspire audiences to contemplate historical and cultural narratives, fostering a stronger resonance with digital art.

Event objective

1. Promote creativity within the university and encourage students to participate in presentations
2. Encourage students and faculty to join in exploring innovative ways of incorporating digital art to gain an understanding of crypto art.
3. Allow education about digital art and virtual galleries to enrich the scope and variety of the NCCU Art and Culture Center's collection.

Event Details:

1. Eligibility for Submission: Open to all university members. Faculty, staff, and students are welcome to register and submit works for the exhibition selection process.
2. Submission Format: Participants are required to submit digital images or video files. A programming workshop will be held beforehand to guide faculty and students interested in algorithmic art in creating their works.
3. This event encourages the use of programming languages for creating works within the field of "Generative Art." Generative Art refers to art created entirely or partially through autonomous systems. Within this realm, "Algorithmic Art" involves the use of computer algorithms, allowing systems to collaboratively produce works characterized by randomness, unpredictability, real-time dynamics, and interactivity. Submissions may be saved in high-resolution image or video formats, reflecting the nature of time art.
4. Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) can encapsulate static images, dynamic videos, digital models, or audio files into a data format recorded on the blockchain. This ensures that creators retain ownership of specific works while enabling the exchange and dissemination of their creations to generate new value. NFTs disrupt traditional methods of exhibition, making art easier to create and interact with. For this event, NFT formats will be used to collect and archive exhibition pieces.

NCCU members are invited to submit digital files or NFT images based on the theme “Resonance in Space” within the specified deadline. Selected submissions will be exhibited at the NCCU Computer Center in March 2025.

Creative Themes:

Submissions may draw inspiration from the following themes:

Homage to YuYu Yang / Arthur Yang, Narrative Landscape, Legend, Light and Illusion, Resonance, Interference, or other related imaginative concepts.

Registration

1.Each participant may submit up to one work for exhibition. Single image submissions must be in PNG format, with a file size of at least 2MB. Video submissions must be within 1GB for review, with higher-resolution files required for the final exhibition.

2.Please complete the online registration form and submission process by 11:59 PM, Sunday, March 9, 2025.

3.Provide a description of the work (maximum 200 words).

4.Submit the exhibition authorization consent form.

5.Notifications and updates, including shortlisted entries, will be announced on the NCCU Arts and Culture Center’s Facebook page and the Office of Student Affairs website.

Participating in the Exhibition 

1. The exhibition will be held on the first floor of the NCCU Computer Center.
2. Selected works will be displayed by the Arts and Culture Center. Exhibited works may be presented as printed images, screen displays, or other formats depending on the space.
3. Authorized images and descriptions of the works will be used for both physical exhibitions and archived in the virtual gallery.

Judges will include faculty members and external experts who will score submissions based on the following criteria:

Selected participants will receive a certificate of exhibition participation.

2025. Creative Workshop: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Saturday, March 1, 2025. Location to be announced.
2026. Registration Deadline: By 11:59 PM, Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Exhibition Timeline:

1. Selection Period: Monday, March 10, 2025, to Tuesday, March 11, 2025.
2. Announcement Date: Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
3. Exhibition Dates: 8:30 AM, Wednesday, March 19, 2025, to 5:00 PM, Thursday, June 6, 2025.
