Pinhole Camera Workshop

  • Date & Time: 26/03/2016 13:00-17:30
  • Venue: Art Hub & Dark Room, NCCU Art & Culture Center
  • Instructor: Chen Chin-pao (Artist)

At the beginning of the 21st century, digital cameras quickly replaced traditional film cameras for their unbeatable convenience. After smart phones were able to take high quality, equally clear photos, photography became a national pastime. Nowadays, we can see people carrying a camera taking pictures and "selfies" anywhere, anytime. Today, 175 years after the invention of the camera, we seem to almost take photography for granted, as if it has always been there. We seem to forget that the invention of the camera was a result of the accumulation of thousands of years of human ingenuity and invention.

This workshop hopes to lead participants to the beginnings of photography, using the simplest of equipment to make our own cameras and photographic plates and take pictures. Returning to the origins does not mean to abandon modern technology, but to experience firsthand the process of image making. When we return to the beginning, this is not just a nostalgic beckoning to the past, but a curious exploration for different possibilities of photography.

Chen Chin-pao

Chen Chin-pao has focused on different aspects of photography since the very beginning of his career. It was a series of documentary portraiture, A Moment of Beauty: Betel Nut Girls, to get him to be noticed. He then works on different projects: Circumgyration deals with "pseudo memory" by taking fragments of memories from elementary school students and parents, then have students to stage and to "reenact" the scenes of memory. Heaven on Earth is a project of social landscape to photograph juxtaposed shrines, houses and graves and depict Taiwan as a land shared by gods, humans and ghosts. His latest ongoing project, Ordinary Household, is dedicated to depict contemporary Taiwanese domestic life. Chen was awarded The Overseas Photographer Award of The 26th Higashikawa Award at 2008. He lives and works in New Taipei City, Taiwan.
